Rubberband Dance: Ever So Slightly: A dancer in a brown jumpsuit is leaning forward balanced on one foot while another dancer supports them by holding onto their foot. Behind these two dancers are another two dancers doing the same action. The dancer leaning forwards in the background is almost doubled over, nearly falling to the ground. In the top right corner of the image, a fiddle player is playing while standing on top of a metal raised platform. The back wall is black and the floor is grey. The dancers are all standing on bear feet.

Ever So Slightly

Victor Quijada is back with ten dancer-athletes in top form. Ever So Slightly explores the behavioural mechanisms and reflexes we develop against the ceaseless flow of irritants that bombard us in our daily lives. Simultaneously delivering delicacy, brutality, finesse, and high-voltage action, the choreographer conveys all the energy contained in urgency, revolt, chaos, and flight.

Ever So Slightly explores the behavioural mechanisms and reflexes we develop against the ceaseless flow of irritants that bombard us in our daily lives. Most of us long for calm and resilience, but how do we get to a zone where noise and aggressivity no longer have a place? Simultaneously delivering delicacy, brutality, finesse, and high-voltage action, the choreographer conveys all the energy contained in urgency, revolt, chaos, and flight.

Victor Quijada continues with his extraordinary dance works, this time with 10 irrepressible dancers, a  DJ, and a wide-open venue. The vast performance space, the distorted bodies, and the live music result in a production on steroids: directing a group of athletes who have mastered his RUBBERBAND Method, the choreographer combines delicacy and finesse with brute, high-voltage movement to capture the energy of urgency, revolt, and flight from danger.

“ [Ever So Slightly] ignit[es] the honed classical and contemporary technique with the energy of hip-hop and capoeira ”

Janet Smith, Stir

Until now, Quijada’s personal creations were conceived for 5 to 7 dancers, but over the years, his choreography commissions for various institutions (Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Scottish Dance Theatre, BODYTRAFFIC, etc.) have accustomed him to work with large ensembles as well. For the first time in a work for his RBDG, he’s bringing together a wild and impressive cast in order to delve deeply into human relationships and the impulses that drive/devour a group of individuals.

The dramaturgy of this work develops through a weeding-out of the ugly and the excessive and the striving for balance between the oppositions that inhabit us (or co-inhabit with us). Sound-wise, Jasper Gahunia, one of Quijada’s longtime partners, is pushing RBDG’s musical signature by creating a bold and original soundscape to be performed live that mixes electronic music, breakbeats, and vintage sampling.

With a team made up of fresh talents and some of the company’s frequent collaborators, inspired by dancers with a wide range of training and experience, RUBBERBAND has moved into a higher gear; Ever So Slightly represents a quest to find a realm of tranquillity within chaos, but at what cost?

The premiere of Ever So Slightly took place in December 2018 at Théâtre Maisonneuve of Place des Arts, in Montreal.
