Live Art Dance and Kinetic are thrilled to come together to co-present “Coastal Currents”, a platform that shines a light on the amazing dance talent that exists in our region! Now in its second year, “Coastal Currents” features short works from Atlantic choreographers, bringing wonderfully rich, vibrant and nuanced work to Kjipuktuk/Halifax audiences. With pieces ranging from mystical and ethereal to vulnerable to playful, four choreographers share work that shows the breadth of choreographic skill that we have right here in Atlantic Canada.
Jayden Gigliotti (NS) brings us Coffee Project, a contemporary juggling and movement piece that shares a “peculiar mixture of complexity and simplicity. Inspired by daily habits, morning routines, and caffeination”, the piece is a journey full of “playfulness, struggle, quirkiness, trial, and unforgiving error”.
“Triggered and nuanced by pandemic impressed restrictions, limitations, reactions, and realizations of realities of self and community,” Stay staying – repeat offenders is a solo work that “lives in the physical rigor, bizarre calm and freeze state that arrive with rage and devastating grief over where we find ourselves and our world”. Sarah Joy Stoker joins us from Newfoundland to share this piece that is set to a fierce and destabilizing score by Elling Lien.
Drawing on her Bahamian roots, Reequal Smith (PEI), dances Caribbean Flamingo, a piece that pulls from Afro Contemporary, Jazz, and Caribbean folk dance. Reequal’s flamingo “stands alone amidst the salty embrace of the warm Inagua Sea, feeling the cool breeze on its feathers … reclaiming balance and preservation”.
A trio choreographed by Jessica Lowe (NS), Enchantress “explores the intricate tapestry of a woman’s mental landscape in a study of lineage and the passage of time, echoing the modern Pagan tradition of The Triple Goddess”. Jessica works with local dancers Marrin Jessome, Sarah Hopkin and Meredith Kalaman.
Together, these four works highlight the skill, talent and ingenuity of the amazing dance artists we have here in Atlantic Canada.
